Promoting my Dad's novel, The Search (for 5 Jamaica College school boys lost in Jamaica's Blue Mountains in 1939), led to a delightful evening yesterday with Geoffrey Haddad and his friend Richard George. After a little tour and talk about our bed and breakfast service here at Neita's Nest, we got into the meat of the matter.
Geoffrey shared with me how the Hartley Neita chronicle of the 1939 event catapulted him to write his own account of his 1967 experience; again, 5 JC boys lost in the Blue Mountains. Yes, the same Blue Mountains which make our coffee world-famous.
Mine was the distinct pleasure of leafing through the immaculately- ordered 75%-complete manuscript of Geoffrey's upcoming book, Trapped...in the Blue Mountains...Jamaica 1967. It is a riveting account of the attempt of 5 teens to chart an unknown course across the Blue Mountain Ridge to its 7,402 foot Peak. An awesome experience it was as Geoffrey flipped through his manuscript, giving me enough detail to imagine the treacherous terrain through which he and his teen aged friends traversed, the thick vegetation, inhospitable weather, and the wild life from which they were extricated in an eventful rescue operation by the Jamaica Defence Force, photos and all!
The book will be out next year, but I am taking bids for movie rights from now.
